Knotted by Love!!

So I did these rough elephants for a t-shirt design for a local band. I did the cover of their album awhile back and they asked if I can do some for a shirt. I was happy to do it. Anyways, long story short, things were going great, they loved the designs and let me work with colors, but once I asked $$$ for it, I got a cold email saying it now looks tacky and sent me links to what they thought it would look like. Not even a thanks or talk to you soon, just that one sentence and links. WTF! ;p
See, I'm sorta friends with these people and it really makes me pissed when they think they could get what they want, whenever they want, but as soon as I ask for some tiny compensation, there's problems. Stupid. Sorry, don't mean to rant, but whenever I see or hear things happen to artists like this, it make me mad and when things like this happen to me, it drives me nuts!!! Anyway, please don't take advantage of artists, they are just trying to get through life like everyone else. ;p bleh....
What do you think?

*NOTE* It only has 3 colors, cuz it's for a 3 color screened shirt. ;)

Man, that sucks! I mean, what if the tables were turned, and somebody asked them to perform their music, for free, without compensation? I think you were totally in the right to ask for compensation, friends or not, and that it was extremely rude and unprofessional of them to respond the way they did. What peeves me off, is that ultimately, it shows a lack of respect that they don't value your time or talent- it's not like you're out of school, or have a lack of experience- and they know that. Anyway, I think they designs are cute :) sorry you ended up having such a negative experience.. blech...

Sorry to hear about the bad experience. Contracts up front (especially with friends) seems cold but its probably in everyone's best interest.

These designs are cute! If the band doesn't use them you should just sell them with cafepress =]

Wow, that sucks, but the elephants are cute though. I dont' think that there was anything wrong in asking for a little compensation, especially if they were going to be making money off of it. It's only fair! I'd be pissed off to.

This makes me so mad. I am sorry to hear about this. I agree with Mark though, get the money up front or in payments....only way to make sure you get compensated. Its lame, I know. They dont know what they are talking about though...these designs aren't tacky, they are adorable! But don't worry, karma is a bitch.....

Thanks guys, yea, normally I would draw up a contract when I'm doing freelance, cuz I'm tired of this crap, but this was something I thought was pretty evident. I haven't wrote back and I'm not sure if I am??? Thanks for the compliments on the lil' elephants. ;) Maybe I will turn them into something later.

I am certainly late coming to the discussion but I have experienced this myself many times. Never with friends tho! It is despicable that they would try to take advantage of you like that. Don't give them a second thought. You were in the right and I'm sure as Daisy said, if they were asked to perform for free they would understand how you feel. The ellie's are super cute tho and you should definitely put them on Cafe Press come Valentine's Day!

DAMN! THAT PISSES ME OFF THAT THAT HAPPENED TO YOU! i think mainly because i know exactly how you feel...i'm not even going to mention who i'm not getting paid from again. but yeah, it especially stings when you're kind of friends with these people. well. i guess the best thing to do is just learn from our mistakes and kill people. yes?
by the way, i think those elephants would make an awesome shirt. if anything bring them to a professional silk screener and have a few printed up for sale on your site :)

oh and another thing because i've been through the same "t-shirt design for bands" road before...if they don't like your design, be sure as hell they don't use them without your permission.
